Leather Care

Look after it and it will outlast the thing it replaced

Genuine leather doesn't need much — but the little it needs, it needs consistently.

Every week

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. That's it. Dust is abrasive over time; removing it is most of the job.

Every few months

Work a small amount of neutral leather balm or conditioner in with a soft cloth, in circles, then buff off the excess. Leather is a skin — conditioning keeps it supple and stops it cracking at the fold.

Test any new product on a hidden area first, especially on our red and tan finishes.

Things to avoid

  • Standing water. If it gets wet, blot with a dry cloth and let it air-dry away from heat. Never use a hairdryer or radiator — forced heat makes leather brittle.
  • Prolonged direct sun. It fades colour and dries the hide.
  • Overstuffing. A wallet crammed past its shape will stretch permanently at the seams.
  • Alcohol, solvents and household cleaners. They strip the finish.

Storing a bag

Stuff it lightly with tissue or bubble wrap and stand it upright in a dust bag or cotton pillowcase — not plastic, which traps moisture. Keep the handles unbent.

New leather smell and stiffness

Both are normal and both settle. A new wallet takes two to three weeks of daily use to soften and mould to what you carry.

Colour transfer

Deeply dyed leather — our red pieces especially — can transfer a little colour onto very light fabric when new. Keep it away from cream and white materials for the first few weeks.
