Looking after it
Real leather asks for very little. What it does ask for, it wants regularly rather than occasionally.
The weekly bit
Wipe it with a soft dry cloth. That is genuinely most of the work. Dust is mildly abrasive and grinding it into the surface every day is what dulls a finish, so getting it off is worth more than any product you can buy.
Every few months
Take a small amount of neutral leather balm on a cloth, work it in with small circles, leave it a minute, then buff off whatever is left. Leather is skin. Conditioning keeps it flexible and stops it splitting along the fold, which is where a dry wallet always goes first.
Try any new product on a hidden patch before you commit to the whole wallet, especially on our tan and lizard grain finishes. Some balms darken light leather more than you expect.
Things that will ruin it
- Sitting in water. If it gets soaked, blot it with a dry cloth and leave it somewhere with moving air. Never a hairdryer, never on a heater. Forced heat cooks leather and it goes brittle and stays brittle.
- Long hours in direct sun. Fades the colour, dries the hide. A car dashboard in a Karachi summer is about the worst place you can leave a wallet.
- Overstuffing. Card slots that get stretched stay stretched. There is no fixing this one.
- Alcohol, solvents, household cleaner. They strip the finish straight off.
The raw tan edge
Only our lizard grain bifold has one. It is left unsealed on purpose, so it darkens as you handle it, and it does that unevenly because your hands do not hold a wallet evenly. Give it a few months. Most people end up preferring it to the way it looked new.
New wallet stiffness
Normal, and it passes. Two to three weeks of daily use and it will have softened and taken the shape of whatever you keep in it. The smell fades on roughly the same schedule.
Putting one away
Empty it first. Store it flat, in a cotton bag or just a drawer. Not a plastic bag, which traps moisture against the leather. And not stuffed, or the slots keep the stretch while it sits there.
